Nassau Court System & Jurisdictions
Nassau County has an extensive court system that is part of the New York State Unified Court System. Each court handles specific categories of cases.
- Supreme Court — a court of general jurisdiction that handles civil claims without monetary limits, divorce cases, real estate disputes, and other complex civil cases. The county clerk maintains the Supreme Court case files.
- County Court — criminal cases involving felonies committed within the county.
- District Court — instead of City Courts in most localities of the county, the District Court operates. It handles misdemeanors, small civil claims up to $15,000, traffic violations, and administrative offenses.
- Family Court — custody, child support, protective orders, cases involving minors.
- Surrogate's Court — this court deals with probate matters, will approvals, and estate administration of deceased persons.
Small Claims cases are handled within the District Court, not by a separate court. If you are unsure which court is handling your case, refer to the Courts & Legal Services page on the county's website.
Nassau Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings
The hearing schedule depends on the specific court.
- New York State eCourts System. The New York State Unified Court System publishes case calendars through the WebCivil Supreme portal — this applies to Supreme Court and County Court cases. You can search by case number (index number) or party name.
- District Court. The District Court schedule is usually available directly at the courthouse or by phone request to the clerk's office. Online calendar access for the District Court is limited.
- Family Court and Surrogate's Court. Hearing dates are communicated to parties through official notices. Public online access to these courts' calendars is limited due to case confidentiality.
To find out the date of the next hearing, the quickest way is to call the relevant court's clerk's office directly or check the WebCivil portal if the case belongs to the Supreme Court.
